Big-cat sanctuary in Bridgeport gets by thanks to big hearts
Big cats with sad stories are commonplace at the Center for Animal Research and Education, a little-known sanctuary in Bridgeport that rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured, neglected and homeless big cats. Currently, 53 cats — 36 tigers, seven cougars, six leopards and four lions — are living at the compound, which operates on a bare-bones budget and the big hearts of interns, volunteers and animal lovers. “We actually turn down close to 1,000 big cats a year because we don’t have the room to take them in,” said Heidi Berry Krahn, director of the nonprofit sanctuary. “We’re full at the moment.”
